Gary was born on Aug. 7, 1945, in Omaha, Neb. His family lived in several states while his father worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber and moved to Kearney after his father died. Gary was 12 years old at the time and from that time forward, Gary always had a job. While attending school, Gary worked at whatever jobs a young boy of his age could obtain in a small town in Nebraska.
In addition to working, Gary lettered in football, basketball and track and was on the tennis, golf and bowling teams. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1963. Gary attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as well as Kearney State Teachers College and the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.
Gary and his high school sweetheart, Linoma Styskal, were married in 1967 in Fort Benning, Ga., where he was attending U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. Following a tour in Vietnam as an infantry officer in 1969, Gary was stationed at the R&R Center in Waikiki where Linoma joined him. Gary fell in love with the islands, and he never left.
Gary spent most of his adult working years in the insurance industry. He was the general agent for Mutual of New York and then Guardian Life Insurance Co. Gary was a big man with an even bigger heart, and he loved working with people of all sorts.
After Linoma became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Gary’s joke was that they could go house-to-house together. When householders rejected Linoma’s suggestion that they could live forever on a paradise earth, Gary could suggest that they get some life insurance. Although not a witness, Gary always supported Linoma in her faith and told everyone that, if the witnesses had it right, it truly is good news that people of all nations need to know.

She had a home-based business with Premier Designs Jewelry for 27 years. She enjoyed her leadership roles and relationship with the home office and her downline.
She was blessed with many dear friends throughout her life and was always so grateful for their prayers.

The Durango Herald, Durango, Colorado, Saturday, April 10, 2010
Toby Peterson
by Ann Butler, Herald Staff Writer
He created the hangout that was the place to go in Durango for three decades. Toby Peterson died of a heart attack in his sleep Thursday. He was 64.
When Peterson and his wife, Mary Lou, bought The Pub with partner Phil Widman and opened Farquahrts and Pizza Mia in June 1973, downtown Durango was pretty quiet. By offering live entertainment, deli food and later its famous whole-wheat crust pizzas, the business became the go-to destination for 20-somethings. Farquahrts was particularly known for Wednesday Pitchers and the Friday Afternoon Club.
The Petersons sold Farquahrts last year.
“It was a helluva bar that was a lot of fun," said former patron Deborah Uroda, now the development and marketing director for the Women's Resource Center. “Toby was always a calming presence, standing in the corner with his arms folded. I always felt very welcome and safe there."
His family said Mr. Peterson, known for his signature handlebar mustache, became a fixture in Durango, a familiar face as he tended bar and mingled with patrons. He also will be remembered by the musicians and staff of the business.
“I looked at my calendar and realized I played 137 weeks over 20 years at Farquahrts," musician Ralph Dinosaur said. “He really took good care of everyone who worked for him. He paid good wages, paid for good accommodations. He was a smart, clever, great guy."
Gary Watkins played in the first band ever to play at Farquahrts.
“Of all the club owners I have ever worked for, none ever came close to Toby," he wrote in a remembrance. “He was always fair, always honest, always open and accommodating. He commanded a loyalty and respect from musicians unmatched in my experience."
In 1985, the Petersons opened a second Farquahrts at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, offering “boogie, booze and bizza" and their signature live music to the area's skiers.
The Petersons were enjoying retired life, although his family said he missed working the floor at the restaurant and bar and talking with locals and tourists.
Peterson was born to Kenny and Elsie Peterson on Aug. 17, 1945, in Kearney, Neb. When he was in high school, his family moved to Sterling, where he graduated from Sterling High School in 1963. He went on to attend Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
While there, Peterson met and fell in love with Mary Lou Brennan of Durango. The couple married Sept. 3, 1966, at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango.
After his graduation from Mines in 1968, the Petersons moved to Kansas City where he had gotten a job with Procter & Gamble Co. While he enjoyed the work, he and his wife missed Colorado and took the leap of buying a restaurant in downtown Durango.
The Petersons devoted much of their spare time to St. Columba, where they taught marriage-preparation classes for more than 20 years. Toby Peterson also served on the finance committee.
After his grandchildren were born, they quickly became the light of his life, his family said. Frequent trips to visit them in the Denver area and vacations with the whole family were some of his favorite activities.
He was looking forward to planting his famous summer garden, trying out new smoked-meat recipes, the annual summer trip with his family and friends to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and his 44th wedding anniversary," his family wrote.
His life and work made a lasting impression on the community.
The era that Farquahrts operated in was a unique time and place, unlikely to happen again," Watkins wrote. “All of us in Durango were lucky to have had it as a social gathering place for many years.
